The menu is chef curated and will have rotating proteins, depending on what fishermen driving up to Long Beach pass by the restaurant to drop off each day. The restaurant sits at the corner of Admiralty Drive and Pacific Coast Highway in Sunset Beach, taking the spot of Fish Camp, a seafood restaurant that closed last year. Calico is named after the Calico Bass which is native to Southern California waters. The restaurant seats about 55 people inside, including a full bar in the middle of the dining area, and 80 people outside. “We’ve got fishermen that fish out of Long Beach, live in Huntington Beach, drive by the restaurant every day and drop seafood off for us,” Andrew Gruel said. Group reservations may not be scheduled the Friday prior to or during event weekends.

It did two to three times more in both the top and bottom lines than any other location. Gruel said he learned from local consumers the difference between Sunset Beach, only a 1-mile stretch of land, and Huntington Beach when opening the fish house. Become a Restaurant Business member today and unlock exclusive benefits, including unlimited access to all of our content. As Gruel looks to scale the family of brands he has created, he said the key is co-tenancy, and building the fast-casual brands with a very-focused menu of one or two items. “We felt like we weren’t done with Slapfish yet,” Gruel said. The new owners of the chain shut down the flagship location in Huntington Beach and Raw Bar by Slapfish.
$160/night – 20 person maximum – No minimum night required except on festival weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), which requires a two-night minimum. Ceremonies may take place from 9 am to 5 pm daily, excluding Calico festival and special event weekends. You supply your own officiant and marriage license, as well as flowers, music and decorations. Calico will handle the set up and take down of your seating arrangements. Today, Calico is part of the San Bernardino County Regional Parks system, which is visited by people from across the country and from all over the world.
The couple, best known for creating Slapfish, a fast-casual award-winning seafood franchise, sold the company last year, with no plans to jump right back into the brick-and-mortar. It proves that the Gruels aren’t done with the seafood world quite yet. Under their restaurant group American Gravy, they’re soon set to launch a Calico Fish House, Lolo’s Tacos and 101 Burger in a space at the Kitchen United MIX on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. Calico, located in the space of the former Fish Camp restaurant, got its name because the Calico sea bass is a fish that’s local to Southern California. In addition, to our full menu, a special three-course Valentine’s Day menu will be available for $80, including a starter, an 8-oz.

These crabs are always at the peak of plumpness to start the season. Pull up a chair and get those crab crackers ready to enjoy these delicious crustaceans. Make your Mother’s Day reservations for Sunday, May 12 and give mom the day she deserves - with the people and seafood she loves the most.
The full-service concepts, however, allow Gruel room to play with the menu and diversify. He is also a believer in creating scalable concepts that don’t require a hood—and not because of the debate about the regulation of gas stoves. Gruel plans to register all of the concepts for franchising this year, including the full-service Calico. 101 Burger will be among the concepts going into a Kitchen United Mix food hall in Santa Monica this month./Photo courtesy of American Gravy Restaurant Group.

The menu also includes sides and salads that will change with every season. Indian-fusion pizza chain will open its newest location in early 2024, will add beer and wine. The Sunset Beach restaurant currently employs 40 people, but the couple anticipates tripling that figure to well over 100 during the peak of summer. The Gruels sold their interest in Slapfish last July to investor Mac Haik Enterprises, a Houston-based firm that first got involved through its restaurant division in 2019.

Until then, Calico Fish House is hosting a recipe contest, in which entrants are invited to submit a recipe that will be included on the menu for a year. The winning recipe will be named after the winner, who will also get to have that dish for free every time they visit the restaurant. The seafood offering is different each time, according to Gruel. Gruel said that he wanted to diversify the menu and level up from Slapfish, but keep the same culinary principles. He noted that the best-performing Slapfish was in Indiana.
Slapfish founder chef Andrew Gruel has come a long way since the brand’s origins as a food truck in 2011. The following year, Slapfish flipped to the brick-and-mortar scene and established their flagship location in Huntington Beach. The sustainable seafood restaurant, known as the “Chipotle of seafood,” has since gone national with franchising opportunities, while Andrew and wife Lauren have since sold their shares of Slapfish Restaurant Group, according to Voice of OC.
Next up is a seafood chophouse called Calico Fish House, which will take over the former Fish Camp at Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach. Chef Andrew Gruel has appeared on multiple Food Network shows, acting as a Judge on the show Food Truck Face Off. Gruel has also been on "TODAY Show", PBS, Cooking Channel, ABC, as well as in numerous publications including The Wall Street Journal, Men’s Health, Food & Wine Magazine, Entrepreneur, and Restaurant Business. One of Calico Fish House’s primary purveyors is OC Wild in Long Beach, California.
All active military eat for free and vets only pay raw cost (roughly 50% off). Chef Andrew Gruel and his wife Lauren have finally opened Calico Fish House, the pair announced on Wednesday. The concept, which was announced in July when Gruel chose to sell his original restaurant chain Slapfish to private equity and leave the company, is full-service, a first for Gruel.
It’s a seafood chophouse with an emphasis on sustainable (certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council) fish and a full bar. The menu changes daily, based on what’s in season and available, and guests can choose their main and sides, like a steakhouse. Sides are more creative than the typical creamed spinach or sauteed asparagus, and might include dishes like a lobster-stuffed baked potato, for example, or pretzel-crusted crab tots. The menu is centered around grilled à la carte proteins including fish, meat, and poultry served with 10 different sauces made daily. Shareable plates include house baked rolls with sweet lobster butter, lobster corndogs, Angry Lobster Pockets, and pretzel crusted crab tots.
